Mental Health & Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Specialist

ROLE PURPOSE: 

Provide high-level technical assistance to MHPSS programme staff with technical support from the Regional MHPSS Specialist, lead the setting up and delivery of Iraq MHPSS programmes for children, adolescents and their caregivers, and contribute to high quality of proposals and reporting.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
• Lead on MHPSS programme development and establish strategic direction of MHPSS programming in-country, in keeping with established international best practice guidance and emerging evidence.
• Develop and review national proposals and reports for donors and members to ensure that proposed MHPSS activities are aligned with local needs, best practice guidelines and donor priorities. 
• Advise on staffing structure and allocation of resources to ensure the quality and safety of MHPSS programs.
• Lead on MHPSS sections of country-level needs assessments and liaise with donor and member office representatives on an ongoing basis to ensure that expectations for MHPSS programming are consistent with operational considerations and capacity in the field.
• Improve technical knowledge of MHPSS among SCI staff. 
• Collaborate with field staff to develop and roll-out locally-relevant, culturally appropriate MHPSS training and program materials, in accordance with needs.
• Review and contribute to regional and global level MHPSS strategy and policy documents
• Document lessons learned, best practices and case studies to shape in-country strategies and programme approaches, and contribute to learning in other sectors.
• Support to ensure appropriate staffing within the operations component of the project team, within budget parameters.
• Establish robust Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEAL) mechanisms for MHPSS at the national level, working with MEAL colleagues to identify appropriate validated psychometric tools and develop robust qualitative tools to assess quality and improve programme implementation and reporting.
• Represent SCI MHPSS programming at national level meetings to contribute technical expertise and to ensure that SCI Iraq MHPSS activities are well coordinated with those of other MHPSS actors.
• Represent SCI MHPSS programming at internal and external regional and global meetings to ensure that our work gains international recognition and that our activities are in-line with the latest evidence and global inter-agency expert consensus. 
• Engage in national and regional MHPSS discussion fora to ensure that SCI Iraq accesses opportunities to engage in innovative MHPSS programming initiatives, training initiatives, and funding streams. 
• Work with other Technical Specialists to advocate for MHPSS considerations in the design and implementation of activities in other sectors (i.e. ‘mainstreaming’ MHPSS considerations in Child Protection, Education, and WASH activities).
• Reviewing and contributing to MHPSS-relevant SCI Iraq advocacy and media initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Required
• Advanced degree in Psychology, Global Mental Health. Psychiatry or other relevant field
• Minimum 5 years of experience in MHPSS field
• Proven capacity to supervise, and coach staff in child protection technical skills and project management
• Experience developing evidence-based MHPSS training materials. 
• Experience of designing and managing major donor projects and understanding of donor compliance
• Sound knowledge of IASC MHPSS guidelines, UNICEF MHPSS Operational Guidelines, human rights, and protection in humanitarian contexts
• Ability to analyse information, evaluate options, and think and plan strategically
• Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including team leading and influencing.
• Experience in capacity building and training of local communities, and protectıon stakeholders regarding education programming
• Ability to write clear and well-argued assessment and project reports
• Work experience in humanitarian emergencies or protracted-conflict settings
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work within different cultural environments
• Ability to work flexibly and cope with stressful workloads and limited resources.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work with limited supervision.
• Competent in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, with competency in basic data analysis.  
• Excellent written and verbal communication and reporting skills in English
• Commitment to Save the Children values and Child Safeguarding.

Desired
• Language skills in Arabic and/or Kurdish
• Experience representing an organisation in coordination meetings in emergency contexts
• Experience in working with refugees, internally displaced people and returnees
