In partnership with Save the Children, Children Centre “Mali Princ” will organize a “Knowledge Day” in Despot Stefan Lazarević primary school in Belgrade for all first to fourth graders on 20th November this year in order to emphasize importance of education for all children, regardless of their ethnic background and socio-economic status.
Due to significant drop out of Roma population in Serbian schools, children of Roma origin from Zvezdara municipality have been engaged in extracurricular reading and writing workshops throughout the year led by experienced “Mali Princ” personnel.
At this event, all beneficiaries of the project will, together with their school mates, read, write and play in a fun school ceremony to celebrate the Universal Children’s Day and praise its equal access to education principle.
“Mali Princ” is actively supporting children, their families and wider community to increase the level of percentage of Roma population in schools since its establishment in 2002, while Save the Children has started formal cooperation with this NGO in early 2013 through joint project titled “Teach me so that I could know” aimed at contributing to creation of models that will prevent dropout of Roma children within the education system of Serbia.
In spite of the fact that Serbia has improved relevant legislative and institutional framework within various Roma Decade initiatives, Roma children continue to present one of the most vulnerable groups in the country.
